KEPRI DISKOMINFO – Adi Prihantara, Provincial Secretary of Riau Islands (Sekdaprov Kepri), led the 2025 National Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Month commemoration in the Riau Islands Province on Monday, February 10, at PT SMOE, Kabil Integrated Industrial Estate, Batam.

"Occupational health and safety are not just formal obligations, but strategic investments that reduce business risks, improve quality of life, and enhance our nation's productivity and competitiveness," said Sekdaprov Prihantara.

The message is particularly relevant as recent data from BPJS Employment indicates a concerning rise in workplace accidents. In 2022, there were 298,137 reported cases, which surged to 370,747 in 2023, and as of October 2024, 356,383 cases had already been recorded. This uptick underscores the urgent need to foster a robust OHS culture to mitigate such incidents and protect workers.

Therefore, the importance of industries adapting to new risks associated with evolving technology and changing work patterns that could impact both physical and mental worker health.

Sekdaprov Prihantara also pointed out that OHS management should go beyond mere compliance and must embed a culture of safety across all sectors.

He outlined three essential K3 cultures that need to be cultivated: a leadership culture that avoids blaming workers (just culture), a reporting culture for K3 incidents, and a culture of continuous improvement (learning & improving culture). "By fostering these cultures, we expect workers to become more proactive about OHS, participate actively, and contribute to building a more reliable production system," he said.

Furthermore, Sekdaprov urged all stakeholders, including industry leaders, to collaborate and intensify efforts to build and sustain a OHS-driven work environment. "The development of a OHS culture requires the involvement of everyone. I urge industry leaders to set the example, pay close attention to worker safety, and actively involve workers in shaping OHS programs that meet the needs of the workplace," he added.

Concluding his speech, Sekdaprov reaffirmed that safety is a collective responsibility. "OHS is not just about protecting workers from accidents; it’s about creating a more competitive and advanced Indonesia in the global arena. Let’s work together to promote a strong OHS culture at every opportunity and make safe, healthy work environments a top priority," he urged.
